USA vs. Belgium: The World Cup Rematch the Whole Country Is Talking About!

Quick Summary

Team USA will face Belgium in the World Cup Round of 16 on Monday, July 6, in Seattle, Washington. This is a rematch of a dramatic 2014 World Cup game that many American fans still remember. A win would send the USA to the quarterfinals for the first time in over 20 years!

What Happened?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is in full swing across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Forty-eight teams started the tournament. Now only 16 are left. Each game is a sudden-death match — lose and you go home.

Team USA got through the Round of 32 by beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0. Striker Folarin Balogun scored the first goal right before halftime. Then Malik Tillman sealed it with a beautiful free kick. It was a thrilling win. But there was a problem. Balogun was shown a red card in the second half. A red card means you are sent off the field and you must sit out the next game. That is bad news, because Balogun had scored three goals in the tournament — more than any other American player.

Belgium, the American team’s next opponent, had their own wild game. They fell behind Senegal by two goals with only five minutes left. Most teams would give up. Belgium did not. They roared back to score three goals and win 3-2 in extra time. Extra time is like overtime — two bonus periods of 15 minutes each.

Now these two teams meet in Seattle on July 6 at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

For USA fans with long memories, this feels familiar. In the 2014 World Cup, these exact same two teams met in the Round of 16. Belgium won that game 2-1 in extra time. Three Belgian players who were in that 2014 game are still in Belgium’s squad today — goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, and striker Romelu Lukaku. Think about that: they were playing in a World Cup twelve years ago and are still here!

For the USA, this is a completely new group of young stars. Captain Tyler Ream leads the defense. Midfielder Weston McKennie controls the middle of the field. And winger Christian Pulisic — who is like the USA’s version of a superhero in soccer cleats — will need to be at his very best with Balogun sitting out.

Seattle’s stadium is expected to be packed and extremely loud. Home-field energy could be a big advantage for the Americans.

Why Does It Matter?

A win would send the USA to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2002. That was 24 years ago! Millions of American fans are hoping this home World Cup is the year the USA finally takes that next big step. Belgium is one of the best teams in Europe. Beating them would be a huge statement.

This is also a special moment for soccer in America. The sport has grown enormously here, and the whole world is watching.

Big Words

  • Round of 16: The stage of the World Cup where 16 remaining teams play one-on-one knockout matches — win and advance, lose and go home.
  • Red card: A penalty in soccer where a referee holds up a red card to send a player off the field for the rest of the game, leaving the team short-handed.
  • Extra time: Two bonus 15-minute periods played when a knockout match is tied at the end of regular time — like adding two overtime periods in basketball.
  • Striker: The soccer player whose main job is to score goals, usually playing closest to the opponent’s net.

Fun Fact

In the 2014 game against Belgium, USA goalkeeper Tim Howard made 16 saves in a single match — a World Cup record that still stands today! He was so amazing that the internet jokingly named him “Secretary of Defense.”

Think About It

If you were the coach of Team USA, what would your game plan be to beat Belgium without your top scorer?
