Tiny Light Robots Can Hunt Down and Catch Bacteria!

What Happened?
Researchers at a university in Wรผrzburg, Germany, created what they call nanorobots. โNanoโ means extremely small. These robots are smaller than one micrometer โ that is about 50 times smaller than the width of a single human hair. If you lined up 50 of these robots side by side, they would only be as wide as one strand of hair on your head!
The robots move through liquid using beams of light. Light pushes against tiny antenna-like wires built into each robot. This push moves the robot forward, the same way wind pushes a sailboat. Scientists can steer the robot by changing the direction of the light. By rotating the lightโs angle, they point the robot wherever they want it to go.
When the nanorobot gets close to a bacterium, a special heat-based force pulls the germ toward it. The robot scoops up the bacterium, carries it through the liquid, and drops it off in a chosen spot. Scientists can pick up whole clusters of bacteria and move them โ almost like a tiny underwater forklift.
The team published their work in the science journal Nature Communications.
Why Does It Matter?
Bacteria are everywhere. Most are harmless or even helpful. But some bacteria cause serious diseases. Right now, doctors fight harmful bacteria mostly with medicines. These tiny robots could someday offer a different approach โ physically finding and removing specific bacteria from a part of the body.
Scientists also see other uses. The robots could carry medicine to one exact spot inside the body, like delivering a package to just one door on a very long street. They could also help researchers study bacteria more closely in their labs.
For now, the robots work in liquid in the lab. Scientists are still learning how to use them safely. But the work shows that light can do much more than help us see โ it can also pick things up and move them around at a scale too small to imagine.
