A Real-Life Dragon! Scientists Find a New Lizard and Name It After a TV Dragon

What Happened?
Deep in the evergreen forests of Mae Wong National Park in western Thailand, a team of scientists made a very exciting find. They discovered a lizard that had never been described before. It belongs to a group called mountain horned dragons — lizards known for the spiny crests that run along their necks and backs, like a tiny dinosaur.
After carefully studying the animal, the scientists gave it the official name Acanthosaura syrax. They named it after Syrax — the dragon ridden by Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen in the TV series House of the Dragon. The lizard earned that name because it shares three things with its fictional namesake: yellowish-green coloring, a small size compared to its relatives, and a habit of laying unusually large numbers of eggs.
The lizard lives only in a narrow band of cool, high-altitude forest about 1,300 meters (4,300 feet) above sea level. That is higher than many mountains in the eastern United States. So far, it has not been found anywhere else on Earth.
The scientists who found it are researchers from Chulabhorn Royal Academy and Kasetsart University in Thailand. They published their discovery in the scientific journal ZooKeys.
Why Does It Matter?
Finding a brand-new species is always exciting. It reminds us that Earth is still full of creatures we haven’t discovered yet. This new lizard is the 23rd known species in its group — and it was hiding in plain sight in a national park!
The Syrax mountain horned dragon has a special look. It has the tiniest neck and back crest scales ever recorded in its entire family. Imagine tiny spines barely bigger than grains of rice running down its back. Its body — not counting the tail — is only about as long as a new crayon.
Scientists are already worried about this little creature. Because it lives in such a small area of forest, any damage to those trees could put the whole species at risk. The researchers are calling for stronger protection of Mae Wong’s mountain forests. They point out that the same forest is home to other rare animals, including the Indochinese tiger.
