Star Explosion! A Dying Star Is Going Supernova Right Now — and You Might See It

What Happened?
A computer sky survey called ATLAS first detected the explosion on September 1. ATLAS scans the sky every night looking for anything new or unusual — sort of like a robotic night watchman for the cosmos.
What it found was a Type Ia supernova. That is a special kind of explosion. It happens in a two-star system called a binary. One star — a dense, dead star called a white dwarf — slowly steals material from its companion. Eventually it pulls in too much. A runaway chain reaction ignites and the white dwarf blows itself apart in a colossal explosion. Think of it like a balloon that keeps being filled with air until it finally bursts — but a billion times more powerful.
The galaxy where this is happening, NGC 7331, is strikingly similar in size, shape, and weight to our own Milky Way. Astronomers discovered it in 1784. Amazingly, another supernova exploded in the very same galaxy just last year in 2025.
Since the discovery, hundreds of astrophotographers have already captured images of the explosion. One photographer caught it entirely by chance — he was already working on a 100-hour photography project of that same galaxy!
The supernova is still brightening. It is currently faint, so you need a large telescope to spot it. But for those with the right equipment, it is a once-in-a-lifetime sight.
Why Does It Matter?
Supernovas are not just dramatic explosions. They are some of the most important events in the universe. The materials blasted into space by a supernova — things like iron, calcium, and carbon — eventually come together to form new stars and planets. In fact, many of the atoms inside your body were forged in ancient stellar explosions like this one.
Type Ia supernovas are also super useful to scientists. Because they always explode with nearly the same brightness, scientists can use them as rulers to measure the vast distances of the universe.
