Surprise Crater! NASA Photographs the Mark a Runaway Rocket Left on the Moon

Back on August 5, a piece of an old SpaceX rocket accidentally crashed into the Moon. Nobody planned it! Now NASA has shared amazing before-and-after photos showing the brand-new crater it made. The crater is about 60 feet wide โ roughly the length of two school buses parked end to end.
What Happened?
In January 2025, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from Earth carrying two robotic spacecraft to the Moon. The bottom part of the rocket โ called the first stage โ came back to Earth and landed safely as planned. But the upper part of the rocket, the section that carried the spacecraft all the way into space, was left floating in orbit around Earth and the Moon.
For over a year, that upper stage drifted through space with nobody controlling it. Slowly, gravity pulled it off course. On August 5, 2026, it came crashing down onto the Moonโs surface near a region called Einstein Crater โ at more than 5,000 miles per hour!
That is as fast as a bullet moving ten times faster than a military jet plane.
The crash was not planned, but scientists had predicted it would happen. They tracked the rocket carefully, so they knew exactly where and when to look.
Between August 11 and 12, NASAโs Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter โ a spacecraft already circling the Moon โ flew over the impact site and took detailed photographs. The images showed a fresh, bright scar on the Moonโs dark surface. Scientists measured the new crater: about 60 feet wide and less than 10 feet deep. The crash also blasted streaks of dust and rock outward in all directions, like a starburst pattern.
NASA also confirmed the impact exposed fresh material buried under the Moonโs older, weathered surface โ material that has been hidden for billions of years!
Why Does It Matter?
This event is a reminder that space is busy โ and messy. As more rockets and spacecraft travel to the Moon, keeping track of what we leave behind is important. Scientists say that as humans build future bases and outposts on the Moon, stray space debris will be a challenge to manage.
But there is also a scientific silver lining. The crash gave scientists a free experiment. By studying the fresh crater and the material thrown outward, researchers can learn more about the Moonโs surface layers and what lies buried underneath.
South Koreaโs Danuri lunar orbiter also captured images of the impact site. That means scientists had views from multiple different spacecraft โ giving them a really detailed picture of what happened.
