A Space Robot Is Going to Rescue a Falling Telescope!

What Happened?

The Swift telescope has been in space since 2004. Its job is to watch for gamma-ray bursts, which are some of the biggest explosions in the whole universe.

Swift circles the Earth, but lately the Sun has been extra active. That heats up the top of Earth’s atmosphere and makes it puff out like a balloon. The puffy air slows Swift down, and it has been sinking lower and lower. If nothing is done, it will fall out of orbit.

So NASA hired a small company called Katalyst Space Technologies to save it. Katalyst built a rescue robot named LINK. It is about the size of a refrigerator and has three robotic arms with gripping fingers. LINK will launch on a rocket that is dropped from an airplane flying high above the Pacific Ocean. Then it will chase Swift, grab on with its arms, and spend a few months slowly pushing the telescope up to a safe orbit.

This story is still developing. The launch was planned for this week, but it was delayed, and the new launch date has not been announced yet. What we know for sure: the robot is built, tested, and attached to its rocket, and the team wants to launch as soon as possible.

Why Does It Matter?

Swift is like a “first responder” for space. When something explodes far away in the universe, Swift can turn and look at it within minutes. Other telescopes are much slower. If Swift is lost, scientists would miss important discoveries.

This mission also matters for the future. If a robot can rescue Swift, robots might one day fix or move other satellites too, maybe even the famous Hubble Space Telescope. It could change how we take care of things in space.

Fun Fact

LINK’s rocket does not launch from the ground. A special airplane carries it up to about 40,000 feet, then drops it in mid-air. The rocket fires its engines and zooms the rest of the way to space!
