Secret Stars Found! The Universe’s First Galaxies Were Way Bigger Than We Thought

What Happened?

For years, scientists could only see the biggest, brightest stars inside faraway galaxies. They assumed those bright stars told the whole story. But they were wrong.

Using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), a team of scientists from Leiden University in the Netherlands led an international study. They looked closely at nine massive galaxies from the early universe. These galaxies existed when the universe was still very young — within about 500 million years after the Big Bang.

The JWST spotted something remarkable. Hidden between all those bright giant stars were enormous numbers of tiny, dim stars. These faint stars are so small and so quiet that older telescopes never detected them at all.

When scientists counted all those extra faint stars, the math changed completely. One galaxy turned out to be nearly four times heavier than anyone had calculated. Think of it like stepping on a scale and finding out you weigh four times as much as the number shows — because the scale was missing most of you!

The results were published in the journal Nature Astronomy on August 18, 2026.

Why Does It Matter?

This discovery shakes up what scientists thought they knew about the early universe. Scientists had already been puzzled by how huge these ancient galaxies were. Now they are even larger than imagined. That makes the mystery even deeper.

There is another exciting clue hiding inside this finding. Small, faint stars often have planets circling around them. If the early universe had far more of these small stars than scientists realized, it may have had far more planets, too. That means planet-making started earlier and happened more often than we ever thought!

The discovery also shows how powerful the JWST really is. It can see things no telescope before it ever could.
