Hold On! Four Astronauts Must Wait a Little Longer for Their Space Ride

What Happened?

The mission is called SpaceX Crew-13. It was originally planned to launch today, September 12, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The four crew members had been training hard. The team is led by commander Jessica Watkins from NASA. She is joined by pilot Luke Delaney, also from NASA. Two more specialists round out the team: Joshua Kutryk from the Canadian Space Agency and Sergey Teteryatnikov from the Russian space agency, Roscosmos.

The crew would have been flying aboard a Crew Dragon spacecraft called Grace, sitting on top of a Falcon 9 rocket. Their home for the next six months would have been the International Space Station, orbiting about 400 kilometres above Earth โ€” as high as flying from New York to Philadelphia, but straight up!

But on August 29, engineers discovered a problem. During routine checks, they found a small leak in Dragonโ€™s propulsion system. The leaking chemical is called an oxidizer. Think of an oxidizer like the air that helps a campfire burn โ€” except in a rocket, it helps the engines fire. Even a tiny leak in that system needs to be taken seriously.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said it could take two to four weeks to repair the leaky part. NASA said the new launch date would be announced once the fix is finished and all tests pass. The mission is now listed as targeting no earlier than late September 2026.

The crew is perfectly safe on the ground. No one was in danger. The whole point of these careful checks is to find problems like this before a rocket ever leaves the launch pad.

Why Does It Matter?

Safety is the number one rule in spaceflight. Even a small problem is worth fixing properly before launch. The people who build and check rockets know that it is always better to wait a few weeks than to rush.

Once Crew-13 does launch, Jessica Watkins and her teammates will join Expedition 75 already in progress on the station. They will carry out science experiments on topics including heart disease and growing crops in space โ€” research that could one day help astronauts travel even farther, to the Moon and beyond.

This is just a small pause on an exciting journey. The rocket will fly โ€” just a little later than planned!
